ON LEARNING DANCE IN 2020: A Series of Personal Reflections by SWBC Students, PART 2

“I am happy I still get to learn from home…”
A reflection by Natasha binti Ainul Nizam

The pandemic has resulted in the shift to online learning due to the MCO, including dance lessons. I had no problem adjusting to it because I am used to learning dance routines from watching YouTube videos at home.

However, there were a few problems such as the absence of proper flooring and technical glitches using the Zoom app. Those problems were solved later on. My parents purchased a dance mat for my dance lessons and practice sessions at home. I am technologically savvier and managed to learn to set up a good home learning system by using speakers and bigger screens to enhance the learning experience.

I feel happy that I still get to learn from home although I miss learning at the studio with my friends. I looked forward to it every week because it keeps my body moving. It helps a lot in maintaining my strength and flexibility. Despite the challenges of online learning, I understand the techniques better because our teacher has to provide elaborate explanation due to the inavailability of physical contact. Our teacher also taught us ballet terms and made sure we memorised them in quiz sessions at the end of class.

I hope that we will be able to return to the studio next year, in a safe environment. I am determined to work hard to achieve good results in my RAD examinations. My dream is to become a dance teacher. My teachers are my role models.
